Chicago - USA, 1/10/1907 to 4/10/1907
Today Chicago is a dynamic and culturally diverse. Is an international center for business and leisure travel, partly due to the accessibility of the city through transportation, a thriving community of businesses and hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc.
In Chicago from one of the most influential bands of the mid-90's in the alternative music called The Smashing Pumpkins .
With Gastón check this on arrival at O'Hare International Airport . This airport is located 29 miles northwest of Chicago. It has 5 terminals apart from each other but united by their own ATS train network connecting all the terminals, metro and long-stay parking. We use this network ATS and then the train from the CTA Blue Line and get off at the Jackson station, there were four blocks from HI Chicago Hostel in the northwest corner of Congress Street Parkway and Wabash Street.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is the operator of the second public transportation system largest U.S. (after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York ) and covers the city of Chicago and 40 suburbs peripherals. The CTA operates 24 hours a day.
We arrived at HI Chicago Hostel at 17:00 or so and did not accept me because I had lost the hostel card. After talking and explaining to the receptionist who was a member, show the various reserves that had been done in other HI hostel, finally agreed to use only the Gaston hostel card. I liked this hostel had many billboards with rides and attractions to visit, and we broke our mouth at breakfast.
lodge After we went to hit a nap, as the day (time difference) was too long. And finally, the nap lasted until the next day at breakfast.
the second day in Chicago , well after breakfast, we began to the city, but especially its parks and museums, and museums were now free. We started down the street Congress Parkway to Michigan Avenue is in the Millennium Park . From here you see old buildings on Michigan Avenue and north are the skyscrapers of the financial district. Then we were in Grant Park, which is next to the former but with the promenade of Lake Michigan . There first thing we saw was the Buckingham Fountain. It was a gift from Kate Buckingham in memory (recall) of his brother, and she was inaugurated in 1927 as the largest decorative fountain in the world. Its design is inspired by the Latona Fountain in the Garden of the Palace of Versailles in Paris (France). The fountain symbolizes the Lake Michigan and the four groups of "Seahorse" bronze representing the four states around. From this park we saw the best views of Chicago the level of Lake Michigan , with its marina, and surrounded by skyscrapers and ancient northern front.
then walked along the promenade called Lake Shore Drive to the southern section of Grant Park , where in 1998 the city of Chicago officially opened the Museum Campus Chicago a 10-acre park against Lake Michigan, bringing together the three major museums: the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. We toured the three attractions for 5 pm and free to enter the three (being a special day with all the free museums) and the Aquarium and the Planetarium, the press card helped us to gain access to special shows were to be paid separately.
Then we went to the huge American football stadium called Soldier Field where the team plays Chicago Bears of the National Football League . We tried to enter but was not open to the public. This stadium is dedicated to the defenders of freedom of the United States .
From here we walked across Pennsylvania Avenue to the north through the Art Institute of Chicago , but we, we were saturated with museums today. We walked toward the financial district, across the Chicago River by the Michigan Avenue bridge. From here we see one of the best views of the Wrigley Building and the Loop.
We arrived at the observatory tower of the John Hancock and again press the delegation of Uruguay was received free. From there we appreciate a good view at night, with the entire city of Chicago lit.
From here we went to dinner at a Mc Donald's to refill where a single small glass, we took about 3 cokes each, and spend $ 3 each for all . Then we walked to the HI Hostel Chicago to sleep.
the third day in Chicago , after breakfast we went very well around the city, with the idea of walking to get that impression full and we always wanted to take the cities, in the sense of being located in it, understand it and have an overview of this amazing city and not only have known museums and attractions. We started walking towards the Chicago Stock Exchange, we went into this bag famous for the marketing of commodities and options (which are two financial market instruments), but there was no guided tour or information center.
Then on the Boulevard Jackson climbed the Sears Tower . Here also in its Skydeck, were waiting to release the delegation of Uruguay to appreciate a panoramic view free daytime Chicago. The view from here was different, because we appreciate more details than we had not seen at night from the John Hancock Observatory .
After being there an hour, we walked through the Greek quarter, full of Italian restaurants and shops en route to the stadium United Center basketball team Chicago Bulls playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Chicago Bulls is one of the most famous basketball teams in the world thanks to the popularity of one of the best baskebolistas the world: Michael Jordan .
Here we could not enter, because after the attack on 11 / 9 to United States are no longer allowed tours of the stadium. What I could see the statue of Michael Jordan , who played for Chicago Bulls during 1984 - 1993 and 1995 to 1998. It was placed there on 1/11/1994, before he returned to the club.
From here we went to walk through a typical American residential neighborhoods, those who have small gardens in front and small steps of 5 steps to access your porch.
At noon we reached the financial district to view a full, full of people on the run, as hours of rest. Here was incredible skyscrapers like New York or Tokyo.
Then we went through Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and The Chicago Borrad of Trade, which is the first modern futures exchange worldwide, established in 1848. Here we learned more of the futures and options at the visitor information center. Among others, who buys and sells, how is the language used, what products marketing, how to read the board prices.
Later we went through the theater district, and there we went into the store Maceys and we bought some good mushrooms. From here we returned to Millennium Park, but the northern section, near the financial district. There rare were in an amphitheater and a bubble made of glass, wherein are reflected all the light of the office buildings. It's good the contrast of very old buildings with modern skyscrapers. Then we walked along the promenade Lake Shore Drive, where the harbor, crossed the river Chicago and entered the Navy Pier (Navy Pier) which is on Lake Michigan . There is good to go for a weekend before the 17 hours or one day to paint movement of people, because there are games, entertainment and food outlets. There also is recommended to take a boat to tour the Lake Michigan . From this pier is also a splendid view of buildings in Chicago .
After dinner we went to bed early because the next day we had to get up very early to move to airport and take plane bound for Washington . We arrived there and we went Airport Shuttle Greyhound Station to take a bus to the city of Philadelphia . And then the next day we returned to Washington to tour thoroughly.
museums and art galleries most important visit and I ran out for a second visit will include the Museum of Science and Industry and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago .
In conclusion, I was left with the feeling that Chicago is a wonderful combination of art, architecture and true American lifestyle.
Here ends my story of my stay in Chicago , and to finish this spot tell them about the history of Chicago : According to the accounts of English explorers seventeenth century, the Indians of Illinois (Potawatomis) were the first to claim a territory called "Chicaugou" and that means powerful, strong or large, and was used by Many tribal chiefs to signify that they were "great" leaders. In 1795 the area was ceded by Native Americans to United States by the Treaty of Greenville for military use.
On 10 October 1871, the Great Fire of Chicago destroyed most of the central area of the city. The fire had destroyed nearly 6.5 km of the city, claimed at least 250 lives and left 100,000 residents homeless. More than 17,000 buildings were destroyed and damaged property was estimated at 200 million dollars. After the fire, there was a larger Chicago. Internationally renowned architects came to the city for reconstruction. In a few years, Chicago resurfaced.
