Roma - Italy 15/09/2007 - 18/09/2007
Siena is a medieval city also very nice. In the main square is held every year the race Il Palio, a horse race without rules, much like the Italians. Something curious happens Siena Cathedral, which require women who wear braces to wear a poncho rather ridiculous foreign ... Should worry about more important things. We had a great time in Siena . We intended to visit more in detail, exploring the scenic Town Hall Square, climb the tower of City Hall to see the shape of the Piazza del Campo. But there was no where to park secure the van and saw that there was not much to see from the van, because we had to squeeze through the narrow streets and medieval style, then we long to Rome. The next day we learned that day played for Milan to Siena there. A pity it did not go the press ... Here you can see photos of Siena .
Rome is the capital of Italy , province Roma and Lazio region ; 2,823,873 inhabitants in 2004 (the province of Rome has 5,352 km ² and 4,300,000 inhabitants). It is located in the valley of the river Tiber , about 20 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea . Rome was the capital of the Roman Empire and Western Roman Empire, so it contains a great story that I will tell you as I recount my experience of this amazing city.
We arrived late afternoon at the campsite Rome on the Via Aurelia before the entrance to the city, close to the Cornelia. It was not easy to check in here, because then they realize they're Uruguayan and told us there was no room. Then we tried again, asking another receptionist and got some tents with beds and cost us build cheaper than carps. This camp was a supermarket, restaurant, pool and bowling club or dance. Dinner, we prepared to leave, and finally we were in disco dancing the campsite, then went to sleep.
the second day in Rome at 9:30 am we took the bus 245 to the Cornelia metro station. In this line we were advised that bus had Pungo and yes, we saw two that were trying to steal. In the Cornelia station we take the subway red line to Ottaviano S. Pietro station to go to the Vatican City to visit the Basilica of San Pedro . In 1929, the Lateran Treaty between the Kingdom of Italy and the Pope, was established in the municipality of Rome the independent state of the Vatican City . At 10:20 am and were in the Piazza San Pietro queuing, because it was Sunday there were lots of people. In this square are two fountains and a beautiful Egyptian Obelisk 25 meters tall. After 30 minutes we joined the queue St. Peter's Basilica and the first thing we saw was La Piedad (which was damaged by a fan and is now behind bulletproof glass). This is one of the finest works of Miguel Angel , who performed at the age of 24 years in 1499.
After touring the interior of the Basilica, we met the papal tombs found in ancient caves in the subsoil thereof. There are twenty Popes funeral monuments, but what caught our attention here was the tomb of Pope John Paul II.
next thing was to from above the Dome of the Basilica of San Pedro to build Miguel Angel . The climb to the top not only allowed us to enjoy a panoramic view of "air" of the Eternal City, but also to familiarize from the inside with the architectural structure of the Basilica. As a first step we climbed 132 meters by elevator and stairs. After appreciating the interior of the Basilica from the top step climb another 92 meters and came as a terrace and watch the magnificent view of the Piazza San Pietro and gardens of Vatican City .
This video shows in detail the Vatican with St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel:
finished the Vatican at 15 pm and gave us a taste, we went to eat at a typical Italian Resturante called "Medusa." Barbecue lunch there or chicken cutlets with French fries or salad, lasagna, and spaghetti with different sauces, ice cream, fruit salad and drinks included. Lunch meal was nice and Uruguay, the bad was that it cost us 15 euros c / u.
Then we went to Piazza del Risorgimento and the Largo di Porta Castello and arrived at the Castel Sant'Angelo. The news was received free of charge once more and met this spectacular XII century castle, built on the ruins of the Mausoleum of Hadrian .
After crossing the bridge opposite the castle on the Tiber River and arrived at the Piazza del Popolo. The owners of the same symmetry is perfect. At its center is the second city obelisk placed in 1589. Here are the churches "twin" Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria de los Milagros. In this square was the 5IVE 2007 tour, which was a sort of basketball-related interactive day.
From here we went to walk the Via del Corso, a pedestrian busy and full of shops with fashions and all the famous brands. They ended at the Plaza Spain wherein the steps of the Church of the Holy Trinita dei Monti where they make the famous fashion shows Rome. This staircase is from 1725 and his feet are the source of the "Barcaccia" P. Bernini. On your right is the column Immaculate Conception, in memory of the proclamation of the Dogma (1856). We climbed the stairs to the church of Trinita dei Monti Blessed with two bell towers domed (1495) and an obelisk in front of the facade was in repairs to scaffolding.
then visited the Fontana di Trevi where they say that if one wants to return to Rome must throw a coin back to the source . I checked because in 1997 I threw well and here I am again in Rome after 10 years.
night I went to the Plaza Bernini and then went to the Piazza della Repubblica. In the center of the square is the Fountain of Naiads and around the plaza were the Baths of Diocletian which extended over an area of more than three hectares, where 3000 people could bathe at once.
Repubblica there at the station we take the red subway line towards Battistini and get off at Cornelia to take the 245 bus heading to Rome camping. We had dinner and went to the envelope.
the third day in Rome at 9:30 am breakfast and take the bus 245 to the Cornelia metro station. In the Cornelia station we do not take the subway red line and decided to combine with another bus to the Piazza Venezia, which is the heart of Rome and heart Italy. Takes its name from Palazzo Venezia, that in 1455 the Venetian Cardinal Paulo II had built. This was the first great Renaissance Roman palace and contains many works of art.
This square is the Monument to Victor Manuel II was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi (1885-1911), built to celebrate the independence of Italy . There is now Parliament. On the Altar of the Fatherland stands the statue of Rome , whose foot was placed in 1921's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of soldiers killed in World War .
do here in front of the excavation for a subway station recently discovered ruins and is currently doing an archaeological survey.
From here we went down the Via dei Fiori Imperiali to the Colosseum area to visit the Roman Forum and Roman Forum . In 1932 it became the avenue, without too much trouble removing the ruins of the forums to which its name.
This surprised me as much as when I was in Istanbul ( Turkey) where it seems there was a governor (mayor or something like that) in the 50's he decided modernize the city, and had the great idea of destroying most of the Roman ruins and other times for better development, depriving the idiot the world to have a second Rome when it comes to things historical.
first thing we visited was the Forum Trajan , with Trajan's Column, Trajan's Markets , the Temple of Mars Ultor and the Forum of Nerva.
already crossing the Via dei Fiori Imperiali and within the grounds of the Roman Forum , were in the Basilica Emilia, the Temple of Saturn , the Tabularium, the Arch of Septimius Severus , the Via Sacra , the Basilica Julia, the Curia, the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, Arch of Titus , and the Temple of Venus and Rome.
Completing the Roman Forum to the stunning Constantine Arch and then visit the famous Roman Colosseum. This is a huge amphitheater, whose impressive remains can still admire their former glory. Building started in order of Vespasian in the year 72 AD and was completed under his son Titus in 80 AD. In building Jewish prisoners were employed. His real name is Flavian Amphitheatre, but was called Coliseum, perhaps by the proximity of the Colossus of Nero . This has become the symbol of the city and his life. Already in the eighth century, said "As long as the Colosseum , there Rome, when he falls the Coliseum , Rome also fall and when Rome falls , the world will also fall."
I tell you a bit of entertainment preferred by the Romans who were the circus games (ludi circus). These games were invented in the last days of the republic, to excite and feed them the warrior spirit that made them masters of the world. This gave rise to the profession of gladiator , who trained in handling weapons, killing each other, while the beasts increased the horror of the spectacle.
not avail us the press card here, and we pay as a carlitos because it is something that is worth it to pay 7 euros to the audio guide. The visit took us an hour, but the queue took us 45 minutes.
This video shows them more detail how the Roman Colosseum:
After this visit we found another great taste, we went to lunch some tasty Italian pizzas around the Colosseum .
then walked down the Via del Quirinale and reached the Quirinal Palace was built in 1574, and 1870 being the summer residence of the Popes, after the proclamation of Rome as Capital Italy , the residence of the king and today is the residence of the President of the Republic. In the square we found a beautiful fountain consists of a stack of granite that comes from the Roman Forum , placed there in 1818.
From there we went again for the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Colonna where the Column of Marcus Aurelius. After crossing the Via del Corso, Piazza di Monte went through Citorio, where the Chamber of Deputies, then the Piazza Capranica and finally arrived at the Piazza Navona. This square is the place where the Stadium of Domitian he was capable of accommodating 30,000 spectators. In the center of the square is a fountain that is a fable of Aesop made marble, which is the source of the Rivers by Bernini. This is a pretty busy place with tourists, but where there are local people who are sitting in the square watching the tourists go. There is also a very nice source is the source of the Moor, where people sit around. It is full of painters and we started talking with one who knew Uruguay.
then take the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and came to Largo di Torre Argentina where there is the Holy Piazza is full of ruins. From here, walk along Via Arenula and arrived at the Ponte Fabricio, which was built in 62 BC and has remained almost intact. On the bridge crossing the Tiber and into the Tiberian Island. It seems that on the ruins of the famous Temple of Piarist, the Greek god of medicine, now stands the Church of San Bartolomé. After crossing the bridge we came to the Palatine and Trastevere area, which means "the heart of Rome ." This is an extremely popular neighborhood.
continue along the Via della Greca and arrived at what was the Circus Maximus. We were disappointed when we arrived because we said, "And this is the Circus Maximus? Although it was restored for the Olympics 1960, the only thing we saw was an area with grass and where there was nothing. Suecede what is apparently the circus is under, still have not made the excavations. It seems that 2000 years ago had a capacity of 200,000 spectators and there were held chariot races (like a small cart with two horses), which was one of the most enjoyable shows for the Romans.
Then we find in the Basilica di Santa Maria in the original Cosmedin the Mouth of Truth, who was a famous closing the main sewer.
We returned to the neighborhood Trastevere because we had recommended explore its narrow streets to see the area clubs and nightlife.
Then, we took a bus and a metro ride from Termini and Lepanto to combine there another metro to Colosseo to see the Colosseum night.
After take us some photos with the imposing amphitheater, we took the metro from Termini to Cornelia and from there the bus 245 to the Camping Rome.
The fourth day in Rome breakfast and parked the truck in a free parking outside the barrier of camping out for the purpose of not paying the pelarnos last night and without further ado. We never did check out and we got the keys to the store as a souvenir. These plantains are still not as alive as to defeat the native resiliency, and think that at check in did not want us to miss ...
We took the bus 245 to metro station Cornelia. In the Cornelia station we take the Red Line subway to Ottaviano San Pietro to visit the Museum Vatican and Sistine Chapel . We arrived there 9:40 am and opened at 10 am, had 3 blocks and a half grand, so we went until we were sneaking a few meters from the door. In the ticket office was not worth press card and present student ID pay $ 7.
The Museum of Vatican is immense, with many rooms, halls, museums, galleries, chapels, halls, courtyards and gardens, rich in art treasures of all kinds. We did it pretty fast because today we had to travel to Genoa first passing through Pisa .
What I liked was the my Sistine Chapel, built by the architect Giovanni del Dolci, between 1475 and 1483. The idea was to be as closed as possible, accessible from the outside, almost fortified. The transcendence of this chapel is the paintings, begun in 1481, collecting Italian Renaissance paintings of the XV and XVI. Here are painted parallel stories of the Old and New Testaments. They represented the Life of Moses (Old Testament), Life of Christ (New Testament). There are paintings by Botticelli, Michelangelo and Perugino and others. Miguel Angel painted the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel from 1508 to 1512. Being here was amazing and really could not stop going because in 1997, was unable to enter.
Then, we took the subway from Ottaviano to Cornelia and from there the bus 245 to the Camping Rome, we took the van and we peel for the city of Pisa to see the Leaning Tower and Duomo and continue towards Genoa .
I got the feeling that I rubber Rome, the rode much better than the previous trip in 1997. It is an amazing city that I believe that has been pulled back by this time a Norwegian crown to Fontana di Trevi .
